Longplaya: AFI's The Art of Drowning

This week it was also my turn to do Pirate Cat's weekly radio special, LongPlaya. Each week a different DJ brings in their favorite record, and spends two hours playing the record along with supplementary material and discussion about songs, the record, and the band.

I focused on AFI's The Art of Drowning, which was released on Nitro Records in 2000. Along with the record, I played some of the band's influences, some interview clips, and B-sides, and talked about some aspects to the record you may not have been aware of.

Despite some serious "technical difficulties" (such is the radio pirate life, I suppose), this week we heard from hardcore band Plead the Fifth, hailing all the way from Sacramento. They brought in a ton of music, I messed up attempting to play their vinyl, the CD player started skipping, then the external cable broke...maybe it just wasn't our night. Nonetheless, we had a total blast and got a chance to talk about the Sacramento scene as well as some of the band's favorite tour stories.

I did an all-electronic set this week, including a block of Depeche Mode, dedicated to my fellow Pirate Cat DJ Alex, who is probably thier number one fan. I also had new intern Will on to read some PSAs.

I haven't had any bands on in a few weeks, but i'm currently working on scheduling some interviews for the coming months...expect to hear from Death Brigade, Los High Tops, Goodbye Gadget, Dyed RED Twice, and more! This week I flew solo, without any performances or interviews. I did, however, have my two favorite friends and classmates, Katie and Jilian, in with me to read some PSAs and tell awkward stories about their experiences on BART. Also listen for my HUGE f-up during the second song i played, where I forgot to turn off my microphone (it's really bad! you'll definitely hear it!) FUN.
